The Gay Girl of Damascus

The harrowing blog posts of Armina Arraf, a lesbian blogger in Syria who is fully out and fully behind the Syrian uprising, inspire the world. X, herself gay and Arab but given to a much quieter life, begins to questions her own commitment to these sides of herself. But when Armina Arraf's shattering secret is revealed, X will find her life turned upside-down.

  1. I don't even know if this story is still on the table seeing as it didn't show up in the last vote, but this is, personally, my favorite story. Not only do I think that it covers an extraordinarily interesting topic, I think the result at the end that this supposedly gay woman turns out to be a straight man not from Syria allows us to ask big questions about fiction, the role of anonymity on the internet. I think the biggest challenge and change I would like to see are one in the same: I think the life of X should be as close to a real one as possible.
